Malabayla Palace
12, Via Mazzini
Residence of the Malabaylas, a Ghibelline family of bankers established since the 13th century in Savoy and, in the 14th century, bankers of the Holy See in Avignon. This building is the finest example of Renaissance architecture in Asti, for the most part well preserved (restoration of a previous medieval building). Guelf windows with cyma decorated with shells and heads; entrance flanked by candelabrum motif. Interior: courtyard surrounded by arcade (now walled up). The coat of arms of the family is depicted on all the capitals.
Montafia Tower-House
7, Via Mazzini
Residence of banking family with "casane" (pawnshops) in Savoy and the Rhine Valley. Part of the stronghold which occupied the whole block. Mullioned windows typical of the Gothic style in Asti. Along Via Malabayla traces of the existence of a vast thermal establishment dating back to the Roman period were discovered in 1980, as well as numerous medieval remains.
