Mazzola Palace
5, Via Massaia
Built at the request of Francesco Mazzola, jurisconcult in the 16th century, and characterized by its portals, its Guelf cross-shaped windows, its vault structure, the style of its capitals, all typically Renaissance. Coffer ceiling with polychromatic decorations in the hall of honour; the hall is decorated with 17th century simbolic motives celebrating the glorious events of the bourgeois family originating from Alba. The building once housed the Good Shepherd Charitable Institute for single mothers, orphans and foundlings. It also housed the Maternity Department of the Civic Hospital. It currently houses the Council Historic Archives, where the "Codex Astensis" (also known as the "Malabayla") and the "Chained Code" of Statutes of the medieval Commune are kept. Other important sections: the Palio Archives, the Historic Photograph Library, the Restoration Laboratory.
Pelletta Palace
54, Via Varrone
Gothic building formerly belonging to the Pelletta family, bankers in the Aosta Valley, Savoy and Cologne in the 13th and 14th centuries. Completely renovated interior, it still bears numerous arches which are typical of the local tradition in the windows of its facade. It is traditionally known as "Pilate's house" perhaps due to the fact that nearby was one of the Stations of the Cross in the popular celebrations of the Passion.
