Piazza Cattedrale
Architecture: The most important example of Piedmontese Gothic, built in the first half of the 14th century by local workers at the request of Bishop Arnaldo De Rosette from Saintonge (western France), inspired by the French models of architecture and decoration. Outer portal south entrance: 14th century, decorated with zoomorphic and vegetable motives of the local tradition. Romanesque
bell-tower (mid 13th century); 18th century sacristies, built following the extension of the building and designed by Bernardo Vittone. Elimination of the ribbing of the vaults (18th century). Paintings: works by Gandolfino da Roreto (15th -16th century): The Madonna of the Banker, The nuptials of the Madonna, The genealogy of the Madonna (dismembered polyptych), The deposition from the cross. By Guglielmo Caccia known as "the Moncalvo": The Resurrection (16th-17th century), 18th century frescos: Francesco Fabrica e G. Battista Rocca in the nave and aisles, the transept and the lantern; Carlo Carloni and Perego in the apses. By Francesco Bassano known as "the Bassanino": Adoration of the Magi (late 16th century). Others: Milocco, Bianchi, anonymous. Sculpture: remarkable corbels and small capital at the central west entrance; "Mary among the angels, apostles and saints" (south outer portal, 15th century). Group of statues in polychromatic terracotta depicting the "Dead Christ" (early 16th century). Wood panelling by Francesco Salario and Antonio Varale. Interior: holy water fonts, formerly baptismal fonts, one of which is pre-Romanesque, the other Gothic, mounted on Roman capitals; baptismal font (15th century) made from Roman relics. Tombstone of Bishop Baldraco Malabayla (14th century) and marble plaque of Arricino Moneta (first example of equestrian monument in Piedmont, 13th century).
